Once a week, we interview one of our Patrons or a photographer from our Slack community on NJspots.com!
We hope that you learn a new spot or new camera setup!
Who are you, and where in New Jersey are you from?
My name is Marlon and I am from Jersey City. You can check out my work at lookupmarlonsaycheese.com.
What are the three best spots for photography in New Jersey, and why?
1. Mt. Tammany is a great hike — not too easy, but not too hard and also has several places to grab pictures. The view from the top is magnificent and refreshing.
2. Fort Lee Historic Park is a great spot to shoot. You get a view of the George Washington Bridge and depending on weather, time of day, and season, the photo opportunities can vary.
3. Lincoln Park West Trail is a nice walking trail to help you feel like you’re out of the city environment for a bit with a view to catch a great sunset.
What's your camera setup?
I personally have a Canon 80d and usually I have a 10-20 Sigma lens on it; however, my job allows me to rent equipment so I love the Nikon Z7 setup with a 24-70 lens or a Leica Q which has a 28mm lens on it. I also like to use a wide angle lens with the Nikon z7.
What's your dream piece of gear? Think big!
My dream piece of gear would definitely be a DJI Mavic Pro 2 and to own a Nikon z7 with a 24-70, a wide angle lens, and some prime lenses.
What's one bucket list photo of New Jersey you haven't gotten yet?
My bucket list photo is the milky way at the Barnegat Lighthouse.
If you want to get this shot too, check out our 2020 Milky Way times to get it set up! And of course our lighthouses map and our guide to the most photographed lighthouse in New Jersey to get you started!
One tip for aspiring photographers?
One of my tips for aspiring photographers is to keep shooting. Figure out your style, figure out what works best for you, and shoot with as much people as you can in order to learn from them. Definitely take a photography workshop if possible. Lastly, don’t be afraid to experiment with your edits.
What's your favorite part of being a photographer?
