Take a hike through history
Hartshorne Woods Park has a variety of different trails, through the woods and on paved ground, which makes it easy for anyone to explore this spot.
Before or after your hike, be sure to check out the Battery Lewis area of the park.
The property on which Hartshorne Woods Park now sits was a defense site during World War II, built to defend the New York Harbor.
During this time, batteries for heavy artillery were built to “modernize coastal defense efforts.” These batteries (and a replica of a gun barrel) can still be seen today.
See wildlife
You can even walk on top of the battery, overlooking the Navesink River — see if you can spot any birds!
Keep your eyes peeled for deer or another wildlife roaming around, especially at dusk.
