Once a week, we interview one of our Patrons or a photographer from our Slack community on NJspots.com!

We hope that you learn a new spot or new camera setup!

Who are you, and where in New Jersey are you from?

My name is Anthony, and I was born and raised in the heart of South Jersey (Franklinville).

I currently reside in NYC for work, but still spend a lot of time in Jersey, specifically down the shore. I can often be found a long the coastline catching a sunrise, or on the bay for a sunset. Landscape and family portraits are my favorite subjects to shoot.

What are the three best spots for photography in New Jersey, and why?

My three favorite spots to shoot photos all revolve around my love for the Jersey Shore:

1. Lavallette: I love to shoot sunrises on the beach, or sunsets on the bay. I can almost always be found in this area during the summer.

2. Barnegat Lighthouse: Catching a sunrise or sunset here can be a lot of fun. But for even more of a challenge, plan a trip to catch the Milky Way.

Plan your 2020 Milky Way shots with our guide.

3. Point Pleasant & Seaside Heights Boardwalks: During the summer I spend a lot of time in Normandy Beach, so when I want to venture out from Lavallette, I’ll head to one of these two places to shoot.

What's your camera setup?

I just upgraded to the Nikon D850 and the 24-120 f4, but my workhorse has been my Nikon D7100 and the 12-24 f4.

What's your dream piece of gear? Think big!

My dream piece of gear is actually 3, the “Holy Trinity” of Nikon lenses. The 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 2.8 lenses.

What's one bucket list photo of New Jersey you haven't gotten yet?

My bucket list photo is a project that I’ve always had in mind but haven’t started yet. I’d like to shoot all the lighthouses in New Jersey. Luckily I think there’s a map for that…

You’re right, there is! Check out our lighthouse map and get planning, Anthony! Or, do the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge and get them all in one weekend!

One tip for aspiring photographers?

My one tip for photographers would be to get out and shoot. Catching sunrises are hard in the summer, and too many times I talked myself out of going. I fell into a habit of trying to read weather reports hoping for the perfect conditions. When I didn’t see them I wouldn’t go. I learned overtime to go shoot regardless. I’ve found that even though the sunrise might not always be the best, I always come away with something I’m happy with.

What's your favorite part of being a photographer?

My favorite part about being a family portrait photographer is being able to capture a moment for a family to have forever. Nothing is more rewarding than the response when they love the photos. Ironically my favorite part of shooting landscapes is that I'm often out on my own, watching that sunrise or sunset and I'm able to take it all in. There's something about the peaceful tranquility of the moment.
