Looking to spend a relaxing afternoon in North Jersey in the outdoors? Walking the 1.5 mile loop around Haledon Reservoir in Franklin Lakes should do the trick.
There are a few detours you can take in Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve — and sights you can see! — along the way, making the trip up to this spot well worth your time.
Take the scenic route on the Blue Trail!
If you take the white loop, as suggested by AllTrails, you will be surrounded by dense forest along the banks of the reservoir.
But take the scenic route that cuts off on the blue trail!
Those blue blazes will take you on a route through the reservoir, where you are surrounded by birch trees and water on all sides. You even have to cross a couple bridges and walk on a boardwalk to make your way back to the main path.
This makes for some amazing photo opportunities.
Check out the dam
At the end (or beginning) of your hike, check out the 625-foot-long dam, which could also be the focal point for some amazing photos.
On the way, you might even run into the local swans.
There are plenty of places to recreate in Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve.
You can get a fishing permit, bring a picnic lunch, or rent kayaks/canoes in the summer (just make sure it isn’t frozen over like it is now!).
Whatever you do, be prepared to pack out your trash — littering isn’t cool!

Happy #ImpactDay! 🎉 . Let’s talk about glass 🚯 . I see glass on popular trails all the time, sometimes near the road, sometimes not, which makes me think that people are going out and smashing bottles in the wild for fun. . Glass takes 1 MILLION YEARS to break down in the wild, even though it’s a “natural substance”! Not to mention it’s extremely hazardous for pups on the trail. . I would HOPE none of my followers would throw glass out the window, but be a friend of the wild and pick up a few pieces the next time you see them. They might be hidden (swipe to see!) but they are there. . . . #wildkeepers #keepnaturewild #KNWpickupparty #impactday #packitinpackitout #standforwhatwestandon #2minutelitterpick #cleanuptheworld #leaveitbetter #wherethewildkeepersare #loveourplanet #trashtag #leavenotrash #11thessential #nationalcleanupday #greatglobalcleanup
